Know Your Locks

Security begins with your home locks. At least this is how we feel at Locksmith Pro Berwyn in Berwyn, IL. When you are trying to figure out what type of locks to have installed, it might be useful to have some information about the various types of locks that are used most often. We certainly do not have a problem letting you know what type of locks we install most often, as there is a good chance that these are the same locks that you want us to install for you.

The Most Widely Used Locks

Clearly, no one knows more about locks than a locksmith who installs and repairs locks. If you are in the market for new home locks then you may want to continue reading this article. If you don’t make the right decision when it is time to have locks installed, your locks could be compromised. Having the best and most durable locks installed isn’t enough. You also have to make sure that the locks are installed in the right locations. We have had some customers ask us to install a high-security lock and a standard interior lock on the exterior door. An expert locksmith will take notice of the types of locks that you would like to have installed and where you want them installed. They will then advise you of the types of locks that are more suitable for the interior locks and make it clear that a high-security lock would serve them best if installed on the exterior doors of their home. Since thieves are far more clever than ever before, you have to make sure that you have the most reliable locks installed on your doors. What some may attempt to do is purchase new locks simply based on the brand name they recognize. This would be one of the worst things that they can do. You may only recognize the brand because the manufacturer has chosen to advertise more than another manufacturer. This does not mean that they use superior quality metals to make their locks. Just think about it. There may be another brand that you are less familiar with because they are choosing to use their money to invest in the quality of the locks rather than advertising. Rather than just making the assumption that one brand is better than another, why not just consult with a locksmith who will be able to tell you whether or not a particular brand is or is not a good one.

Again, we believe that it can be very useful to our customers to identify some of the most widely used locks used today. Please find some of the locks that we install, most often, below.

  • Pin Tumbler – This type of lock has pins that will have to line up precisely with its locking mechanism so that the lock will open. Whenever the wrong key is used to attempt to unlock a lock, the pins will not line up and the lock will not disengage.
  • Tumbler lock – This is the most widely type of lock that is requested. The tumbler lock has a bolt that will secure the lock.
  • Warded locks – It has a bolt that goes directly into the lock. If you have or someone attempting to gain access is using the wrong key, the bolt just won’t move. The reason that a bolt is used in the design of the warded lock is because it works to prevent unauthorized entry.

Digital or Electronic Locks

You may already be familiar with digital or electronic locks, as they have increased in popularity over the years. There are some manufacturers who are fully aware of this level of popularity and that is why they are making this type of product more readily available to the average household. There was once a time when this type of lock was only used by commercial businesses. Since it is so effective, homeowners are now interested in having this type of lock installed more than ever, regardless of the expense. With affordable options on the market today, our locksmiths are now installing more digital and electronic locks. Below are some of those locks.
  • Biometric locks are the types of locks that will identify a personal characteristic of the person attempting to gain access into a certain area, or in this case, the home. Once the persons fingerprint of eye retina is stored in the biometric system and identified, the lock will disengage. All that the person will need to do is put the finger of the stored fingerprint on a keypad. Once recognized by the system it will disengage the lock. This is definitely the type of lock that would be known as a high-security lock.
  • Digital locks require that a very precise code is entered into the systems keypad. Once the right code is put into the system, the lock will open. When the incorrect code is entered into the keypad, the lock will not disengage.

Making the Right Decision

By no means are these the only types of locks that are available to you. There are literally hundreds of locks to choose from. However, in order to make things easier for you, we have simply highlighted those that are requested most often. A qualified locksmith is capable of pointing out the locks that may be most suitable to your needs. They will often tell you about the advantages and disadvantages of the various types of locks. There are certainly lots of videos online and online articles that will advertise certain locks as being durable. However, no one knows better than a locksmith, as to whether or not this is true of a particular type of lock. This is why we are encouraging our readers to consult with a locksmith before purchasing a lock and having it installed. We know that there is much to consider when you are attempting to add a lock to your home. This information should act as a guide when trying to select the right lock.
